Sidney Sussex College was founded in 1596 and named after its foundress Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex. It was from the start an avowedly Puritan foundation. Oliver Cromwell was among the first students (although his father became ill and he never graduated), and his head is now buried beneath the College's chapel. The original Hall Court was built of brick, but in the early 1800's the dilapidated buildings were covered ,with cement rendered to look like stone, by Jeffrey Wyatville. He also removed the classical gateway and replaced it with a new porter's lodge and tower and added Gothic gables and battlements to the buildings. Chapel Court, originally completed in 1627, was rebuilt by James Essex in 1774 and in the 1880's the porch and bell turret were added by Jeffrey Wyatville. The chapel was also altered and lengthened in 1912.
