St Catharine's College was founded in 1473 by Robert Woodlark, the Provost of King’s College.
It is likely that it was named for St Catharine who was a patron saint of learning. The college was ready for habitation and formally founded on St Catharine’s day (November 25) 1473. It was initially known as Katharine Hall but when the college was granted new statutes in 1860 it adopted its current name.
The college was largely rebuilt in the 17th century. The three-sided Main Court, which is almost unique among colleges in Cambridge, was built during the period 1675 to 1757. It was admired by Ruskin for its dark coloured bricks.
