Jesus College, the only Oxford college to date from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, received its first royal charter on 27 June 1571 as 'Jesus College in the University of Oxford of Queen Elizabeth's Foundation'. The founder was a Welshman, Dr Hugh Price, Treasurer of St David's Cathedral in Wales, and the college maintained very strong links with Wales until late in the 19th century. The College had a residential frontage on to Turl Street from the time of its foundation in 1571. This was extensively altered in 1756, with a rusticated and pedimented gateway, and completely rebuilt by J C Buckler in a 17th century vernacular style in 1855. The chapel, built in 1619, was extended east to Turl Street in 1636. To the side of the chapel stands a large horse chestnut tree.
