Magdalen College was founded in 1458 by Bishop Waynflete, Lord Chancellor of England, for the study of theology and philosophy. The site was originally occupied by the Hospital of St. John the Baptist, parts of which are incorporated in the college buildings.
In 1728 Edward Holdsworth, a fellow of the college, prepared a plan for major redevelopment and extension of the college which involved demolishing much of the medieval cloister and the Founder’s Tower. However, only the north range was built in 1733-34, three storeys high with a loggia and five pedimented central bays. It is an impressive building in its own right although the unfinished return ends are a reminder of was it was meant to be. In 1824 Thomas Harrison completed the ends of the building by adding two forward stepping bays.
