Magdalen College was founded in 1458 by Bishop Waynflete, Lord Chancellor of England, for the study of theology and philosophy. The site was originally occupied by the Hospital of St. John the Baptist, parts of which are incorporated in the college buildings.
The main buildings, which were designed by William Orchard, are arranged round a cloister entered by a gateway beneath the Founder’s Tower. The tower was built in 1479 and housed part of the President’s lodging. It was also the original principal entrance to the college. The buttressed and pinnacled tower is elaborately carved and decorated in late Gothic style.
