The college was founded by Edward II in 1324 and named after one of the original houses on the site which contained an Oriel window. In 1902 St Mary Hall was merged with Oriel College. The Rhodes Building, funded by Cecil Rhodes who was a ‘mature student’ replaced the Principal’s house in 1909. It was designed by Basil Champneys and incorporates the old gatehouse to the High Street. It was built in neo-Jacobean style to house undergraduates. The statues are of Cecil Rhodes above with King Edward VII and George V to each side of the central window.
