Pembroke College, was founded in 1624 on the site of the medieval Broadgates Hall. Named after the third Earl of Pembroke who was Lord Chamberlain and Chancellor of the University, it was originally intended to supply places for boys from Abingdon School. At first the college made use of the existing 16th and 17th century buildings but these have been replaced, mainly in the 19th century.
The classical Chapel was designed by the Oxford master mason William Townesend. Building started in 1728 on one side of the Commoner’s Garden abutting the west range of the Main Quad. The Chapel Quad also contains The Hall which was built in 1844 in perpendicular gothic style by John Hayward. The range of ‘new’ buildings adjoining this and backing onto Beef Lane are also by John Hayward. On the east side of the quad is the Library. Chapel Quad was known as New Quad or the Grass Quad until North Quad was opened in 1962.
