The Town Hall, Oxford
The Town Hall, Oxford
The first Guildhall was built on this site in 1292. The present Town hall was built between 1893-7 on the site of the previous 18th century Town Hall. A competition for the design of this building was won by a young Paris trained architect, HT Hare and the new building was opened by the Prince of Wales on the 12th May 1897. The main façade follows the Jacobean theme used in the design of other university buildings by TG Jackson. The windows overlooking St. Aldate's, some of which are projecting Oriel windows, are mullioned and transommed. The ornately embellished gables along the roof were carved by William Aumonier. The Museum of Oxford on the corner of Blue Boar street was the public library until the 1970's.
