La Scuola Grande di San Marco Limited edition giclee print ![]() ![]() The Scuola Grande di San Marco was one of the six scuole grande – the most important confraternities in Venice.
It adjoins the Dominican church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo and faces onto one of the largest squares in the city. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1485 and took ten years to rebuild. The façade, which was completed by Mauro Codussi after the board of the scuola dismissed the first architect, is thought to have originally been gilded. It is decorated with delicate niches and pilasters and white and polychrome marble statues. Many of the friezes were carved by Tullio Lombardo, the original architect's son. In 1819 it became an Austrian military hospital and it is still in use now as a hospital. Copyright (c) Virtual Archive 2008 All rights reserved
